So you’re moving into your very first home. Congratulations!
This is an incredibly exciting time for you and your family. If you’re like most first-time homeowners, though, you’re probably feeling a little overwhelmed by what comes next. And though you do have a lot to accomplish, it’s always easier if you take things step by step.
Here are four easy steps to take when you’re moving into your first home.
1. Pack an Essentials Box
Okay, so this tip applies before you actually step foot in your home. The point of an essentials box is to give you easy access to the things you’re most likely to need, keeping you from digging through boxes at midnight. Consider packing:
- Extra chargers
- A set of towels and clothes
- Toiletries and medicine
- Scissors, tape, and rubber bands
- Basic utensils like forks, knives, and openers
- Garbage bags
- Flashlights and lightbulbs
2. Take Pictures
This tip is especially important if you’re renting. Take pictures of each room, focusing especially on trouble spots like stains on the carpet or cracks in the walls. Be sure to label your pictures, too, so you won’t forget what the picture was supposed to show.
Taking pictures is also a fun way to track your progress. You can even print them for a unique display at your housewarming party.
3. Clean, Clean, Clean
It may be tempting to start unpacking everything immediately—but don’t! Take advantage of your empty home to do a full cleaning. Run the dishwasher and laundry machines, steam clean the carpet, and wipe down all hard flooring.
If you live in a bug-prone area, now is a great time to have an exterminator visit as well.
4. Unpack with Purpose
Instead of unpacking the second you’re done cleaning, make a detailed plan first. Decide which rooms you’ll tackle first, and then inspect them before you open a single box. Make a list—or even a diagram—of what will go where. By planning well, you won’t end up with a giant pile of stuff blocking the doorway or having to rearrange ten times before everything will fit.
